The professional summary is the two or three lines at the top of your resume. It is the first thing a recruiter reads and it often decides whether they continue. Done well, it tells them who you are, what you are good at and why you fit the job in under ten seconds.

This guide shows how to write a resume summary, gives you a formula and offers 20 examples for different situations in India.

What is a resume summary?

A resume summary is a short paragraph, usually 2 to 4 lines or 40 to 70 words, that highlights your most relevant strengths and achievements for the target role. It is different from a career objective, which focuses on what you want. A summary focuses on what you offer. If you are a fresher with limited experience, a career objective works too.

A formula that works

[Professional title or years of experience] + [2 to 3 strongest skills or domains] + [one measurable achievement] + [what you want to do next or contribute].

Example: Data analyst with 3 years of experience in SQL, Power BI and Python. Built dashboards that reduced reporting time by 40% for a retail team. Seeking to turn complex data into clear business decisions.

Tips for writing it:

  • Start with your role or experience level, not with 'I'.
  • Use numbers when they are true and can be explained.
  • Mirror two or three keywords from the job description.
  • Avoid vague words such as 'hard-working', 'dynamic' and 'result-oriented' unless you prove them.
  • Keep it in the third person without pronouns, for example 'Software engineer with...' rather than 'I am a software engineer who...'.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Writing a long paragraph. Four lines is the limit.
  • Making it generic. If it could describe anyone, rewrite it.
  • Listing duties. Use outcomes and results.
  • Repeating your entire resume. Pick the three best points.
  • Using the same summary for every job. Adjust the title and keywords.
  • Adding first-person pronouns. Resume style normally avoids 'I' and 'my'.

How to tailor your summary quickly

  1. Copy three to five key requirements from the job description.
  2. Check which ones you genuinely have.
  3. Rewrite the first line to include your target job title and the top skills.
  4. Add one result that shows these skills in action.
  5. Compare with the posting using Resume vs Job Description.

If you do not have numbers yet, use the achievement generator to turn your duties into outcome-based statements. Then build and preview your resume in the Resume Builder.

Key takeaway

A strong summary is short, specific and aimed at one role. Use the formula, replace the example details with your own proof and update it for each application. It takes five minutes and gives the recruiter a reason to read the rest of your resume.
