Resume Format for Freshers in India (Free ATS-Friendly Template and Examples)

The best resume format for freshers in India: what to include, section order, a ready-to-copy template, common mistakes and how to check it for ATS.

If you are a fresh graduate in India, your resume has one difficult job: convince a recruiter that you are worth an interview without any full-time work experience. The good news is that recruiters of entry-level roles do not expect a long work history. They expect a clear, honest, well-organised resume that shows your education, skills, projects and potential.

This guide explains the best resume format for freshers in India, the exact order of sections, what to leave out, and a simple template you can copy.

Which resume format is best for freshers?

There are three common formats: reverse-chronological, functional and combination. For freshers, the best choice is a reverse-chronological resume with a strong education, skills and projects section.

  • Reverse-chronological: lists the most recent items first. It is the format that recruiters and applicant tracking systems (ATS) understand best.
  • Functional: groups content by skill and hides dates. It looks like an attempt to hide gaps, and many ATS parse it poorly. Avoid it.
  • Combination: mixes both. It works for career changers, but it is usually unnecessary for a first job.

Use a single-column layout, a standard font such as Arial, Calibri or Times New Roman, 10 to 12 point text and A4 page size with comfortable margins.

The ideal section order for a fresher

For someone with little or no experience, this order works well:

  1. Header: name, phone number, professional email, city and links (LinkedIn, GitHub or portfolio).
  2. Career objective or summary: two or three lines.
  3. Education: degree, college, university, year of passing and CGPA or percentage.
  4. Skills: technical and relevant soft skills.
  5. Projects: two to four of your best projects.
  6. Internships or training: if you have any.
  7. Certifications: only relevant ones.
  8. Achievements and extracurriculars: hackathons, competitions, leadership roles.

Once you have a year or more of experience, move Experience above Education and shrink the education section.

What to write in each section

Use a professional email address (for example, firstname.lastname@gmail.com) and a phone number you answer. Add your city, because many recruiters filter by location. A LinkedIn link is helpful; a GitHub link is important for tech roles.

Career objective or summary

Keep it to two or three lines and make it specific to the role. Compare these two:

Weak: Seeking a challenging position in a reputed organisation where I can utilise my skills.

Better: B.Tech CSE graduate with hands-on experience building Python and Flask web applications. Seeking a software developer role where I can contribute clean, tested code and keep learning.

Education

List your highest qualification first. Include the degree name, college, university, years and CGPA or percentage. If your marks are strong (for example, above 70 percent or 7.5 CGPA), keep them visible. If they are low, you can still include them if the employer's form needs them, but make sure your skills and projects get the attention.

Skills

Group skills so that they are quick to scan, for example:

  • Programming: Python, Java, SQL
  • Web: HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Flask
  • Tools: Git, VS Code, MS Excel
  • Soft skills: communication, teamwork, time management

Do not list skills as star ratings or progress bars. ATS cannot read graphics, and recruiters cannot tell what '4 out of 5 stars' means.

Projects

Projects are the most valuable section on a fresher resume. For each project give the name, the tools used, what the project does and your contribution. For example:

  • Resume Analyser (Python, Flask, SQLite): built a web app that reads PDF and DOCX resumes and gives an ATS score. Implemented text extraction and a scoring engine, and deployed it on a VPS.
  • Sales Dashboard (Excel, Power BI): analysed 10,000 rows of retail data and created a dashboard that highlights top products and monthly trends.

Add a GitHub or live link when you can. Be ready to explain every project in an interview.

Internships, certifications and achievements

If you completed an internship, describe it like a job: role, company, dates and two or three achievement-focused bullets. Include certifications only if they match the job, and mention the platform and year. Add achievements such as hackathon positions, coding contests, college club roles or volunteer work, because they show initiative.

What to leave out of a fresher resume

  • Photo, unless the application asks for it. Most private-sector applications in India do not require one, and a photo can confuse ATS layouts.
  • Date of birth, marital status, religion, father's name and full address. These details are not needed to judge your skills. Your city is enough.
  • A long declaration paragraph. If an employer requires one, a single line is enough.
  • Irrelevant hobbies and generic skills such as 'MS Word' for a developer role.
  • Spelling mistakes and different fonts. They signal carelessness.

ATS tips for freshers

Many companies, especially large IT and service firms, use an applicant tracking system to collect and search resumes. To stay readable:

  1. Use standard section names: Education, Skills, Projects, Experience.
  2. Keep text selectable. Do not export your resume as an image.
  3. Avoid tables, text boxes, icons and multiple columns.
  4. Include keywords from the job description where they truthfully apply to you.
  5. Save as PDF unless the employer asks for DOCX.

Check the result with the ATS Resume Checker before you apply, and use Resume vs Job Description to see which skills you may be missing.

How long should a fresher resume be?

One page. A fresher with a page full of strong content is better than two pages of padding. If you are struggling to fit everything, shorten the objective, drop old school marks and keep only your best three projects.

Final checklist before you apply

  • The resume is one page, in a clean single-column layout.
  • The objective is specific to the role.
  • Education, skills and projects are easy to find.
  • Every bullet is true and you can explain it.
  • The file name is clear, for example Aarav_Mehta_Resume.pdf.
  • You have run an ATS check and fixed the issues.

Key takeaway: for a fresher, a one-page, single-column resume with a specific objective, strong projects and honest details works better than any fancy design.

A clear, honest and well-structured resume will do more for your career than any fancy design. Start with the template above, tailor it for each job and keep improving it as you learn new skills. When you are ready to build it, try the Resume Builder or read our guide on what makes a good ATS score.
